Het mime-type van een record kan worden genoteerd in dit veld. Het wordt gebruikt om het technische datatype van het leerobject aan te geven. Dit kan door implementatoren worden gebruikt om na te gaan met welke software het object kan worden geopend, maar ook om (grafisch) aan te geven om welk type leermiddel het gaat (video, audio, etc.).

De officiële mime-types dienen te worden gehanteerd. Wanneer een gewenst mime-type niet als zodanig geregistreerd is bij IANA, moet het mime-type vooraf gegaan worden met "x-", bijvoorbeeld: "application/x-ACTIVprimary3".

Het format "non-digital" moet worden gebruikt om aan te geven dat een leerobject geen representatie op het internet heeft (bijv. boeken).
